Sequencing Is an Essential Reading Skill for Early Readers

Sequencing is an important comprehension skill that helps young readers understand what they are reading. Developing this skill will help them understand more complex text as they grow as readers. Here are four benefits of having strong comprehension skills.

Four Benefits of Strong Comprehension Skills

As children grow, they are developing many skills. Some of these skills are fine and gross motor skills and others are in the cognitive area. Comprehension is one of the skills that we as teachers and parents can assist our children in acquiring. There are at least four main reasons need strong comprehension skills.

Builds the foundation for all future learning.

  • If children understand what they read, they can access information in other content areas such as science, social studies, math word problems and others. Comprehension graduates the reader from learning to read to reading to learn.

Strenthens critical thinking and problem-solving.

  • Comprehension isn't just retelleing something; it's thinking. Students learn to make predictions, identify important ideas, compare and contrast, and understand cause and effect. These skills transfer to real life situations and more advanced academics later.

Supports vocabulary and language development.

  • Children who understand what they read naturally grow their vocabulary. As they encounter new words in context. They learn the meaning of the words, word relationships, word usage, how language works. This strengthens speaking, writing and overall communication.

Deepens engagement and fosters a love for reading.

  • When kids understand stories and informational texts, reading becomes enjoyable; not frustrating. This helps them connect with characters, visualize scenes, ask questions and build confidence. Students who enjoy reading early are for more likely to become lifelong readers.

Frog and Toad Are Great Stories for Teaching Sequencing

Frog and Toad stories are perfect for the first and second grade reader because they follow clear events and have warm loveable characters. The stories are fun and engaging and great for teaching sequencing and early comprehension skills.

  • Step 1) Read or Watch the Frog & Toad Story

Start by reading the story aloud or watching the follow-along video lesson. Allow children to enjoy the story without stopping or analyzing during the first read.

  • Step 2) Talk About What Happened

Discuss key moments from the story using questions like: 'What happened first?' and 'How did the story end?' This helps children recall and organize story events.

  • Step 3) Use the Sequencing Printable

Have your child work through the worksheet, which includes a numbering activity, draw-and- sequence boxes, and a short writing prompt.

  • Step 4) Use the Writing Extension

Writing is an important skill to develop along with reading. The writing process helps children remember more details for a longer period of time. Practicing writing skills also helps them strengthen expression skills.
