Charlotte Mason’s Educational Philosophy
Charlotte Mason: Christian Educator
Charlotte Mason, a Christian educator, believed every child was a whole person — created by God, gifted with purpose, and deserving of a rich education. As Karen Andreola once observed, Mason’s deep love for the Lord shaped her compassion for people and her profound respect for children. Charlotte viewed children not as blank slates or commodities to be molded for society’s use, but as individuals made 'fearfully and wonderfully' by God (Psalm 139:14).
In a time when many saw education as a means to produce efficient workers, Mason’s philosophy was revolutionary. She reminded us that 'the child is not a product to be used but a soul to be cherished.'
A Transformation of Thought
I grew up surrounded by educators — teaching was part of the air I breathed. Yet as a young child, I was certain I’d never become a teacher. The idea of teaching felt tedious and, truthfully, filled with too much paper!
I still remember my mother’s classroom — stacks of worksheets, folders, and charts multiplying like magic. Even as technology has advanced, the piles of paper persist. But over time, God softened my heart.
He revealed the beauty in guiding a child from confusion to comprehension — from sounding out simple words to confidently reading stories aloud. Watching a child unlock meaning for the first time felt sacred; and it truly is!I began searching for the foundation that supported education as a journey into truth rather than an activity tainted with frustration and fatigue.
Meeting Charlotte Mason
It was during this season of searching that I “met” Charlotte Mason — not in person, of course, but through her writings. As I read her words, I found the very heartbeat of what I had been yearning for: an education rooted in love for the Lord, rich in ideas, and respectful of the child’s individuality.
A New Way of Seeing Children
Charlotte Mason observed that too often children were educated merely to serve someone else’s purpose — the employer, the state, or the ambitions of adults. She urged parents and teachers to see beyond this, reminding us that every child carries a divine calling.
Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, 'Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.'
Education as an Atmosphere, a Discipline, and a Life
Charlotte Mason’s approach can be summarized in three guiding principles:
1. Education is an Atmosphere – The environment a child grows in shapes their heart and character.
2. Education is a Discipline – Good habits form the backbone of character.
3. Education is a Life – True learning feeds the mind and spirit.
Here philosophy causes us to understand that these there principles help mold the whole child. As a result the child grows into an adult that has had an opportunity to discover what gifts and talents they possess.
Charlotte Mason’s Lasting Influence
Though Charlotte Mason lived in the late 1800s, her influence continues to transform education today — particularly in the homeschooling world. Yet her ideas extend far beyond homeschool walls. Families, churches, and classrooms all benefit from her belief that children learn best through love, respect, and curiosity.
Charlotte Mason allowed her love for the Lord to impact how she regarded children. She carried with her the truth that children are unique individuals with gift and callings given by God. Children are to be loved, cherished and nurtured. The adult’s responsibility is to guide the child but also help that child discover how their giftings can bless humanity. This is in opposition to seeking ways in which to chain that child to a life of being used as a tool or the means to some other person’s selfish end.
A Closing Reflection
Charlotte Mason reminded us that education is a sacred partnership between God, parent, and child. She invites us to see learning not as a checklist of achievements but as a lifelong journey of wonder.
